What Is Digital Dentistry?

Digital dentistry means using computer-assisted devices, methods and technology — fully or partially — during diagnosis, planning and treatment. These methods were developed to minimise human error, increase production precision and shorten treatment time. From simple fillings to complex implant procedures, aesthetic planning, smile design, orthodontics and porcelain veneers, many applications now make use of digital technologies.

A key advantage is data preservation: the fillings, veneers, bridges, orthodontic aligners and night guards that are produced can be stored in databases, so that if they ever need to be remade, production can happen from the same data without taking a new impression from the patient.

Digital Surgical Guides (Surgical Guided Implants)

This approach places implants at precise angles and positions, improving success rates, and reduces bleeding by removing the need to lift the gum tissue. Pre-operative 3D tomography provides a detailed view of the bone structure, allowing the implant size, angle and position to be carefully planned.

Laser Dentistry

Laser is a non-ionising light that does not accumulate in tissue and does not carry the harmful properties of X-rays; using the correct wavelength and dosage is essential. Laser use provides disinfection and sterilisation in the treated area, allowing selective removal of decayed tissue with minimal loss of healthy tooth structure and near-bloodless surgical procedures with fewer post-operative complications.

Digital Impressions and Scanning

Traditional impression methods can trigger the gag reflex; digital scanning minimises this discomfort. Intraoral cameras create precise 3D digital models for computer-based applications, improving patient comfort.
