BUSI 234 Consumer Behavior

This course explores consumer behavior from determining consumer needs and wants, the process by which they are satisfied, and the environment in which the behavior occurs. The objectives of the course are to introduce the student to concepts developed in psychology, economics, and sociology and their relationship to consumer behavior, to involve the student directly in the study and analysis of consumer behavior, and to develop in students the ability to translate what can be learned into marketing action implications.
The goals are to provide conceptual understanding of consumer behavior, provide experience in applying consumer behavior concepts to marketing strategy and social policy decision-making through case analysis, and develop experiential capability in using consumer research. This course covers major influences on the consumption process, including psychological, situational, and socio-cultural factors. This course provides both a framework and tools necessary to analyze both financial statements. Securities analysts use financial statements to rate and evaluate companies that they offer to customers. The bankers use financial statements to decide whether a loan should be extended or not, and whether the borrower's conditions should be determined. This course sets out to identify and examine the causes of conflict and to offer a range of practical techniques for resolving disputes. Skilled negotiation is often crucial and this course introduces a proven approach that is used widely by professional mediators and negotiators. You will have the opportunity to explore and practice key ideas using presentation, self-assessment, role play and discussion in a friendly and informal group setting.
This course teaches participants how to manage emotions during conflict while working collaboratively toward a win/win resolution. Participants will complete a conflict style assessment, learn the five styles of conflict, and identify their dominant style. This course introduces positive conflict management processes, including active listening and communication skills, principled negotiation, mediation, arbitration, victim and criminal-offender mediation, and nonviolent direct action. Good leaders have always been expected to be able to solve new problems, capitalize on new opportunities and navigate through the ever-changing landscape of business. Leadership is a complex process by which the leader influences others to perform and achieve. The leadership attributes – belief, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills – are all traits, which can be learned. This course provides the basis for understanding what leadership is and what leaders do to be successful. This course will actively engage students in the acquisition of information about historical and contemporary theories, concepts, and issues associated with leadership. An interdisciplinary course designed to introduce the student to the tasks, strategies, and skills of effective leadership. Course activities will move the student from theory to the practical processes of leadership.
This course will also emphasize team building. Teambuilding, teamwork, and team leading draws information from a wide variety of disciplines to introduce students to the ever important topic of teaming. BUSI 492 Independent Study

The Independent Study Project or dissertation provides students with the opportunity to complete a substantial piece of work on an approved topic in Business Administration. The relevance to a course or courses taught in the degree must be made evident. The exercise of writing the dissertation is designed to give students the skills and experience to work independently and to prepare them for management careers and/or further academic study. 
The topic must may be based on any one or more of the following approaches: 
a.    Original fieldwork; 
b.    The critical analysis of statistical material; 
c.    The critical analysis of research publications; 
d.    Original synthesis of material derived from secondary sources. 
Each student will be assigned an academic supervisor who will give academic guidance of up to a maximum of 6 hours in total. The dissertation topic should be consistent with the degree title and approved by the supervisor. The length of the dissertation should not exceed 10,000 words.
