Antalya Bilim University School of Foreign Languages hosted a conference titled “Enhancing Learning Through Effective Teaching” which posed the question of how English Language Teaching could be made more effective. The event, which hosted three speakers of different nationalities who are experts in their fields, took place on Saturday 10th of March 2018, at Rixos Downtown Antalya Hotel with the broad participation of teachers from nearby universities and high schools. The first speaker, Dr. Simon Phillips, who acted as the vocational development unit coordinator at Bilkent University School of Foreign Languages for many years and currently works as a course coordinator at Anatolian Training Institute (ATI), stressed that it is important for the teacher to have insights into the learning process of learners for effective language teaching. After the first speaker, Gülfem Aslan, who has carried out studies on teacher training in the field of English Language Teaching and now acts as the vocational training unit coordinator at Sinav High School, addressed the audience. In her speech titled “Teaching with Mindfulness in Mind,” Gülfem Aslan spoke about how having mindful individuals as teachers can contribute to students’ learning in the field of language teaching. Lastly, Tony Prince, who is acting as the academic coordinator at Norwich Institute for Language Education, stated that following evidence based teaching techniques provides important data to allow teachers to determine students’ needs and use appropriate teaching techniques. The Director of the School of Foreign Languages of Antalya Bilim University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Kaplan thanked each of the speakers at the end of the conference. Stating that events like this significantly contribute to the vocational development of teachers, Kaplan expressed the university’s desire to bring together the participants with important names in the field of English Language Teaching through similar events in the future.
