Eşref DEMİR

Eşref DEMİR is a Professor of Biology at Antalya Bilim University (Antalya-TURKEY). He served as the Founder Acting Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences at Antalya Bilim University. He also served as the Founder Director of the Vocational School of Health Services. Currently, he has served as Advisor to the Rector (Innovative and Entrepreneurial University studies) and Vice Dean at Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. He completed his undergraduate studies in 2004 at Akdeniz University. He received his Master and PhD degrees from Akdeniz University, Faculty of Science in Antalya working on Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) as a model organism. He has 16 years of experience in the fields of Genetics, Genetic and Molecular Toxicology, Nanogenotoxicology, Drosophila Genetics, General Biology and Human Biomonitoring. By improving and applying a number of Genetic techniques (next-generation sequencing (NGS), microRNA expression, genome-wide association study (GWAS), injections fly larvae and/or adult, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs),RT-qPCR, gene expression, genotyping of Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) lines, immunohistochemistry cell counts, Comet, Micronucleus, the wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) in D. melanogaster, the soft agar colony formation assay, etc.), his identified many key components of Genetic pathways.

As a Post-Doctoral Researcher Fellow with international (Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and University of Bradford) and national fundings (International Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Programme, TÜBİTAK-BİDEB 2219), he has focused in the field of genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of engineered nanomaterials at National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) Laboratories of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States of America (USA), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in Spain and University of Bradford in United Kingdom (UK). He has interested in the evolution and genetics of D. melanogaster and its parasites, using the tools of Genomics and Molecular Genetics at University of Cambridge in the UK. In addition, he was also awarded the Turkish Fulbright Commission-Fulbright Turkey-United States Cultural Exchange Commission-Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program (Fulbright 2022-2023 Academic Year) to work at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital (Boston, Massachusetts, USA) to conduct research in the field of Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Molecular Neuroscience, Autophagy, Neural Stem Cell and Cancer Molecular Biology.

He is a member of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Turkish Society of Toxicology (TST). He has completed 27 projects (as Project Leader, Post-Doctoral Researcher Fellows, Co-researcher and Researcher/Expert) supported by the U.S. FDA, the TUBITAK, the YOK (the Council of Higher Education), the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Akdeniz University and the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Giresun University. He has published 65 papers in internationally recognized scientific journals (Science Citation Index-SCI). He has presented 50 both international and national scientific meetings. He has also served as a Referee and/or Editor for 161 papers in different scientific journals including Scientific Reports, Small, Particle and Fibre Toxicology, International Journal of Nanomedicine, Foods, Turkish Journal of Biology, PLoS ONE, Nanotoxicology, Frontiers in Public Health, Frontiers in Toxicology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Chemosphere, Chemical Research In Toxicology, Science of the Total Environment, Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, Drug and Chemical Toxicology, Journal of Food Biochemistry, Environmental Toxicology, Food and Chemical Toxicology, Aquatic Toxicology, Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A: Current Issues. He is serve as Associate Editor in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B: Critical Reviews and Frontiers in Toxicology (in Nanotoxicology section), and as Editorial Board Member in Journal of Applied Toxicology, Public Health and Toxicology, Turkish Journal of Biology and Toxicology Reports. He is also serve as Topic Editor in the topic of “Environmental Toxicology and Human Health” for MDPI (International Journals of Molecular Sciences, Cancers, Cells, Biomolecules, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, BioChem, Environments). He has 1813 citations received to publications (according to Google Scholar, https://scholar.google.com.tr/) and his h-index: 25 and i10-index: 47.
