Course Objectives

This course aims to provide civil engineering students with a fundamental understanding of materials science, including the classification and behaviour of engineering materials such as metals, polymers, and ceramics. It covers atomic structure and bonding, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of materials and their relevance to structural performance. Students will learn key concepts such as stress, strain, Young’s modulus, and stress–strain relationships, including elastic and plastic deformation, yield strength, ductility, and toughness. The course also introduces common construction materials and emphasizes material selection, deformation behaviour, and methods for detecting material failure in civil engineering applications.
