In Antalya, which largely maintained its rural and agricultural identity during the early Republican period, the urbanization movement of the 1940s was followed by a significant transformation in its identity, primarily due to the state-led tourism development plans implemented after the 1960s. The tourism policies of the time aimed to create a modern tourism center in the region, and tourism potential became the most important component in the city's shaping and development. The transition from traditional "obas" (traditional settlements) used by the local population along the coast to camping areas serving travelers, modern beach activities envisioning hybrid use by locals and domestic/foreign tourists, and large-scale spatial arrangements such as motels, hotels, and holiday villages, illustrates the impact of tourism on the city's daily life.
Sustainable Tourism Maps for Antalya
This section examines the history of mass tourism and the experiences of different countries, focusing on mass tourism in Antalya and the search for alternatives. It explores the relationship between cultural routes, agro-tourism, eco-tourism, and various sustainable alternative tourism types with the city's dynamics, their contributions to local development, and their potential impact on socio-economic, physical, and economic space, along with possible scenarios for Antalya. The alternative tourism and architecture concepts discussed in parallel with the "Tourism and Architectural Design" course conducted in the Spring 2020-21 semester at the Department of Architecture of Antalya Science University are shared here.
