This course is offered as a specialization course for students interested in public international law. The use of force has always been a part of relations between states. However, especially starting from the XIXth century, the humanitarian dimension of the military activities of different states has been addressed. Civilians and armed forces were considered to have certain rights that should be protected by hostile states. In particular, in this course, students will be introduced to the history of the development of international law and the history of conventions (including the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the Additional Protocols of 1977). HUK 326 Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage
The aim of this course is to provide law students with a certain understanding and sensitivity about conservation. The course first explains what is meant by cultural heritage and natural assets and then why they should be protected. By giving many examples from Turkey's extraordinarily rich cultural heritage and nature, their value, universality and the issues of belonging, identity and consciousness that come with these concepts are examined. When it comes to the question "How should we protect it?", the course focuses on conservation law, explaining both the conservation legislation in Turkey and the functions and responsibilities of international organizations (such as UNESCO, Europa Nostra) involved in conservation.
