As part of the GAST 106 Agricultural Production course, on April 26, 2022, the first-year Gastronomy and Culinary Arts students visited Koppert to learn how Bumblebees are utilised as pollinators for crops and wild plants. Special thanks to the General Manager, Mr Mehmet Bulut and the Marketing and Planning Leader, Mrs Hatice Emrah Kesimler Tekneci, for their demonstrations and valuable explanations of the lifecycles, colonies and buzzing power of bumblebees. At Koppert, we also learned why biological crop protection (i.e. using beneficial insects, bacteria and viruses) should be preferred by the plant growers over the chemical pesticides; how the market has been shaped by the effects of strict legislation on the use of chemicals and the market demand by the conscious and informed consumers to protect the environment and maintain the biodiversity.
