This course aims to give a proper knowledge to the students of basic design theories and strategies related to the development of spatial concepts in architectural design, including composition, color, form, relationship of elements. The course is based on study of human interaction focusing on social influences shaping personality, structure and dynamics of human society. The course aims to investigate analogies and differences of the traditional architecture in the Mediterranean Basin. The area has a long history, some of the most important and mightiest civilizations in the world have risen and flourished in the region. Although the art of building in the Mediterranean coast has always had a number of local and regional influences, the course will analyse certain features of the traditional architecture, which are common among the structures and buildings throughout the Mediterranean region, and how the structure's location along the Mediterranean coast may demand certain architectural elements to be present in it. The student will learn to recognize these elements as distinctive features of the style, and to relate them to specific architectural objects of the Mediterranean Basin.

The course aims at giving students an understanding of the history of Ottoman architecture from its early period in Anatolia to the “Baroque” period in Istanbul and to look at Ottoman architecture in the Arab provinces, in particular Egypt and Syria. Upon completion of the course, students should know about the various sources of Ottoman architecture, the achievements of the architect Sinan in the creation of the classical style and the evolution of İznik ceramics in Ottoman architectural decoration. They should also be familiar with the post-classical and baroque styles of the 17th and 18th centuries and discuss the relationship between imperial and provincial styles. The course will teach them to interpret ground plans and elevations and to use the bibliographical references in a manner that enables them to write interesting essays and an original dissertation on the subject.   • AE 462 New Building Design in Historical Sites

This course will examine the theories and techniques necessary to investigate the morphological evolution of a structure and its physical setting within the historical site as preliminary approach for understanding the possible processes of new building design in such a context. Students will learn and apply methods relevant to the reading of physical fabric and applied to a case site. The coursework assumes a knowledge of the core curriculum in historic preservation

  • AE 463 Restoration and Re-use of the XX. Century Heritage

The course is conceived as an introduction to the restoration and reuse of the 20th century architectural legacy, considered as historical, symbolic and aesthetic resource, but also as possessing an economic and ecological value. The first part will illustrate the emergence and evolution of this disciplinary domain and will tackle the key-issues of debate: the notion of heritage, the issue of authenticity, the terminology. The second part will therefore address, through the presentation of case studies, various issues closely related to practice: from the “monographic reading of the work”, to the definition of a new compatible function, until the development of intervention strategies.

  • AE 464 Industrial Archeology

The course of Industrial Archaeology aims to study the physical remains of industrial societies—including artefacts, systems, sites, documents, traditions, and landscapes—within their cultural, ecological, and historical contexts. This discipline fills a critical void in the modern intellectual and professional landscape; the students will learn the complex situations of industrial society at the core of their curricula. Important case studies will be analysed, also with specific report task to be set after visiting industrial archaeology sites.

  • AE 465 Vernacular Architecture in Anatolia

This course provides a general framework of vernacular architecture in Anatolia. It gives an overview of differentiated Anatolian residential architecture in historical perspective. The study focuses on the ways of understanding vernacular form with case studies including buildings, settlements, and scattered groups. The student will acquire the sense for identifying and analyzing vernacular buildings in relation with the environs and the texture they formed; gain awareness about the cultural and local geographical characteristics and the interactions between them. Reasons of differentiation of architecture for different climatic or cultural basins will be investigated.

  • AE 466 Principles of Historic Preservation

The objective of this course is to enable the students to understand the principles, theory and ethics of conservation of historic structures and sites. It also examines the historical evolution of historic preservation, reviews theoretical frameworks and issues. The program is set within the abroad heritage context and explores current models of practice.
