On November 5, 2024, an online talk was held for our department students, moderated by Lecturer Gamze AKYOL and hosted by Architect and Ph.D. Candidate Ekin OLCAY. The event offered a rich discussion, delving deeply into Italy's methods and perspectives on the preservation of cultural heritage. Italy, renowned for possessing one of the world's most ancient and diverse cultural heritages, garners global attention with its innovative approaches and practices in this field.
During the talk, particular emphasis was placed on Italy's strategies, technological innovations, and sustainability-focused approaches to the preservation of art and historic structures. Discussions about Italy's cultural heritage preservation process highlighted the importance of a systematic management model. The principles of restoration and the technologies used in conserving historical structures and artworks were thoroughly examined. Case studies illustrated how one of Italy's innovative restoration techniques, laser-based surface cleaning technology, enables cleaning without damaging the artifacts while ensuring the long-term preservation of aesthetic values. Such technological advancements not only maintain the physical existence of the artifacts but also support scientific data collection processes.
Additionally, analyses of the economic, touristic, and cultural contributions of restoration projects in Italy revealed that these efforts are not merely conservation-focused but also serve as a multidimensional value-generation process. The talk underscored that preserving cultural heritage is not just a technical matter but also a societal effort to raise awareness. Strategies employed by Italy to engage local communities in cultural heritage preservation and to foster awareness were a key focus of the discussion. Projects carried out through collaborations between local governments, non-governmental organizations, and the public have developed a comprehensive approach to heritage preservation that reaches broad segments of society. This strategy is evaluated as a holistic approach aimed not only at preserving heritage but also at passing on its cultural and historical value to future generations.
The session also addressed practices in Italy aimed at the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage. Factors such as energy efficiency, material selection, and reducing environmental impacts were highlighted as integral to restoration processes. Inspirational examples from Italy demonstrated how environmental responsibility can be integrated with heritage preservation efforts.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Architect and Ph.D. Candidate Ekin OLCAY for this valuable talk, which inspired our students and offered diverse perspectives.
