On October 3, 2024, a conference was held by Assoc. Prof. Umut KAYAPINAR at Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Fine Arts as part of the IAED 1001 Interior Design Studio I course, which is led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Instructor Buket ŞENOĞLU, Lec. Parla ÖZKUL, Lec. Canan BEDUR, Lec. Dr. Arzu ÇAKMAK, and Lec. Ekin ELİNÇ.
The conference aimed to provide a deep perspective on abstract approaches in Turkish painting, enhancing students' artistic knowledge and delving into the depths of abstract art.
At the beginning of the conference, Assoc. Prof. KAYAPINAR captured the students' interest by introducing the works of significant abstract artists in Turkish painting. References to master artists such as Cemal BİNGÖL, Erol AKYAVAŞ, Abidin ELDEROĞLU, and Abidin DİNO offered a rich perspective on how their creations could be applied in students’ projects.
Subsequently, Assoc. Prof. KAYAPINAR provided information on the history and key representatives of the "Abstract Expressionism" movement, emphasizing how this movement emerged in the artistic context and the impact it had on Turkish painting.
The interactive section of the conference was enriched by student participation. Following Assoc. Prof. KAYAPINAR's guidance, students engaged in discussions on how abstract paintings should be interpreted. During this process, key elements to consider when examining abstract artworks, the understanding of visual language, and how to combine emotion with thought were explored in depth.
Assoc. Prof. KAYAPINAR's conference encouraged interdisciplinary interaction within the fields of art and design. The terminology and language necessary for effective communication with members of various disciplines hold great importance in art practice. Students had the opportunity to understand the social context of art and its relationship with other fields involved in multidisciplinary projects.
In this context, we extend our sincere thanks to Assoc. Prof. Umut KAYAPINAR for his valuable contributions and the insights he shared.
