Collaborating with Different Disciplines in Interior Architecture Project Management – Accounting
As part of the "Design Talks" event series organized by the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department at Antalya Bilim University, a significant session was held on February 17, 2025. Moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Başak KARADUMAN and Lecturer Canan BEDUR, the session took place within the scope of the IAED 4102 Interior Design Project Management course. With valuable contributions from Accounting Specialist Belin DORUALTI, students received in-depth insights into project management, implementation processes, and professional practices.
The session further addressed the critical role of client management and communication in achieving successful project outcomes. It was pointed out that while some firms complete projects without direct client interaction, this approach is not always ideal. It was emphasized that clients often request design changes during the process, which affects the budget. Therefore, informing clients about budget impacts and obtaining their approval for changes were highlighted as essential steps.
The importance of cost control at every project stage was also discussed. Since prices in some sectors fluctuate constantly, making advance payments for certain materials and services can be advantageous. It was noted that in commercial projects, design fees and implementation fees should be assessed separately.
Another key topic was the importance of written contracts with clients. It was explained that projects typically allow three revisions, with additional modifications incurring extra charges. Before starting a project, payment plans should be clearly defined and agreed upon with the client. While interior designers' fees are guided by the Chamber of Interior Architects, the client profile and project type also play a role in determining final costs.
This event provided interior architecture and environmental design students with comprehensive knowledge on project management, implementation processes, and professional practices. Students had the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts and develop skills aligned with industry needs.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Accounting Specialist Belin DORUALTI for sharing her valuable expertise with us
