On October 3, 2024, as part of the IAED 3103 Furniture Design course led by Asst. Prof. Mehmet Uğur KAHRAMAN, Asst. Prof. Enes Can KILIÇ, and Res. Asst. Ferhat KOYUNCU, a comprehensive interactive presentation was conducted in collaboration with DUAL Architecture Construction Industry and Trade Inc. The presentation, delivered by the company’s co-founder Mehmet Adsız and project manager Merve Dede, focused on wooden and metal materials that could be used in seating units and tables. DUAL Architecture Construction Industry and Trade Inc., based in Antalya, is recognized as a firm that integrates the dynamic design approach of the region and its rich cultural heritage into furniture design. With its innovative approach in the industry, the firm provided students with an opportunity to closely examine the relationship between material science and furniture design, allowing them to advance their knowledge and skills in this field.
During the presentation, students explored samples and examples of various materials, including wood and metal, gaining in-depth knowledge about critical physical properties such as surface texture, weight, durability, workability, and lifespan. This analysis facilitated the students' understanding of how different materials are employed in furniture design and how each material is selected for specific design purposes. In particular, practical demonstrations on the role of materials in the design process, as well as how various surface coatings and processing techniques can be applied, offered the students hands-on experience.
The presentation by DUAL Architecture Construction Industry and Trade Inc. emphasized the importance of selecting the right materials in furniture design and highlighted the impact of this choice on a product’s aesthetics, functionality, and durability. The students gained an understanding that furniture design is not only an aesthetic endeavor but also a comprehensive process that requires technical knowledge. They learned that ergonomic considerations, cost analysis, and environmental sustainability are essential criteria to consider when choosing materials. The students acquired a broader perspective on how furniture, materials, and finishes work together in the design process, understanding the significance of making informed material selections in alignment with the design’s purpose and aesthetic values.
The presentation played a crucial role in helping students gain valuable insights into determining the most suitable materials for a design’s objectives and requirements as they develop their design processes.
We extend our gratitude to Mehmet ADSIZ and Merve DEDE from DUAL Architecture Construction Industry and Trade Inc. for their valuable contributions and presentation.
