In Antalya Bilim University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, within the scope of the IAED 3353 Conservation and Conversion in Interior Space course conducted by Lec. Dr. Gamze AKYOL, a technical field trip was organized on November 18, 2025, to the Old Village Municipality Building located in the Çıplaklı Neighborhood of the Döşemealtı district in Antalya. This activity constituted one of the fundamental components of the pedagogical framework of the course, which aims to equip students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the conservation of interior spaces and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Within the course framework, the adaptation of spaces to contemporary functional requirements through the preservation of cultural heritage, architectural conservation, sustainable design, and interior intervention principles in historic buildings are addressed in their environmental, social, and functional dimensions.
During the technical field trip, the building was examined in detail on site; measurements were taken, photographic documentation was carried out, and sketch-based spatial observations were recorded. Students had the opportunity to directly observe the building’s structural characteristics, material condition, spatial organization, and existing traces of deterioration. The data obtained constituted the primary reference material for the adaptive reuse projects developed within the scope of the course final project, enabling design decisions to be developed in an analytical manner based on real data. The technical field trip made a significant contribution to students’ ability to test their theoretical knowledge within the context of a real building and to translate it into practice. Moreover, the field trip contributed to their understanding that the adaptive reuse approach is not merely a formal transformation, but a holistic design process that considers cultural, social, and environmental sustainability.
The technical field trip strengthened students’ skills in technical documentation, spatial analysis, and design development, and made a significant contribution to their professional awareness in the fields of architectural conservation and adaptive reuse.
