Visual Design Principles

As part of the IAED 4352 – Advanced Communication Skills for Interior Architects course at Antalya Bilim University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, an important talk event was held on March 6, 2025. The course was instructed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Enes Can KILIÇ, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ümit BAYIRLI from Pamukkale University, Department of Industrial Design, joined the students for this special session.
The main theme of the talk focused on visual design principles and advanced presentation techniques.

Throughout the event, Dr. BAYIRLI emphasized how interdisciplinary communication and visual storytelling skills, especially at the intersection of interior architecture and industrial design, can elevate a project to a higher level. Various examples of visual design and typology studies were presented, aiming to help students better understand the fundamental principles of building a design language.

The presentation thoroughly addressed the key principles to consider in layout design —such as hierarchy, balance, contrast, alignment, and use of white space. Dr. BAYIRLI highlighted that correctly applying these principles in professional design outputs directly influences the perception of the presented projects. By showcasing layout examples at different scales, it was illustrated that a good presentation must not only be aesthetically pleasing but also clear and persuasive.

The event was not limited to theoretical explanations. Dr. BAYIRLI also provided one-on-one feedback on students’ own layout designs. Students were informed about strategic elements such as the preliminary preparation process, audience analysis, and the selection of an appropriate presentation language when designing a layout. The questions directed to students during this process strengthened the interactive structure of the session and encouraged active participation.

At the end of the event, during the question-and-answer session, students had the opportunity to ask specific questions about their own projects and designs, receiving direct expert feedback. The knowledge they gained, particularly regarding advanced presentation techniques, is expected to contribute significantly to developing a more professional approach in their academic and professional careers.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Asst. Prof. Dr. Ümit BAYIRLI for his valuable contributions and wish all our students success in their professional design careers.
