Working with Different Disciplines in Interior Architecture Project Management - Civil Engineering & Mechanical Engineering
As part of the "Design Seminar" event organized by the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Antalya Bilim University, on March 03, 2025, valuable insights into project processes were shared with students under the coordination of Asst. Prof. Dr. Başak KARADUMAN and Lec. Canan BEDUR, within the framework of the IAED 4102 Interior Design Project Management course. The event featured the contributions of Mechanical Engineer Ayşe VARDARYILDIZ and Civil Engineer Tarkan VARDARYILDIZ.
The event began with an explanation of the history of interior architecture, highlighting the evolution of spatial organization from the early humans' cave dwellings. Information was also provided about how the discipline of interior architecture emerged and developed over time.
The critical importance of collaboration between interior architects, civil engineers, and mechanical engineers during the design phase of a building was emphasized. It was pointed out that bringing together all disciplines (structural engineering, interior architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) before the project begins can help prevent potential problems and enable the smoother progression of processes.
The importance of effective site management and strong communication with workers and contractors was discussed. It was noted that while communication should remain professional, excessive familiarity might undermine work discipline. The discussion also addressed how errors made by workers could be rectified and what management approach should be adopted to prevent these mistakes. The impact of each task on the subsequent stages of the project was emphasized, highlighting the necessity of being well-prepared in advance.
Mechanical Engineer Ayşe VARDARYILDIZ shared her on-site experience, mentioning how only the block she managed was successfully completed without issues. The contribution of being proactive in site management for the smooth progress of the project was underscored. Furthermore, examples were shared to illustrate how miscommunications on-site can lead to significant errors (e.g., a worker making incorrect measurements due to a floor count mistake). It was emphasized that mistakes can happen to anyone, but the key is the ability to rectify them.
The event raised awareness among interior architecture students about the history of interior architecture, its role in project processes, and the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration. The practical content of the course was enriched with real project examples regarding site management, communication with workers, and how the process should be managed. We thank Mechanical Engineer Ayşe VARDARYILDIZ and Civil Engineer Tarkan VARDARYILDIZ for their valuable contributions and experience-sharing.
