Organizing Different Disciplines in Interior Architecture Project Management
On February 24, 2025, the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Antalya Bilim University organized a comprehensive event aimed at supporting the professional development of students. The event focused on topics such as management processes, team coordination, budget control, and client communication in interior architecture projects. The event was held under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Dr. Başak KARADUMAN and Lec. Canan BEDUR within the framework of the IAED 4102 Interior Design Project Management course. The guest speaker, Interior Architect Sabiha ALPASAR, shared important insights from her industry experience and professional practices.
The necessity of overseeing the entire process in interior architecture projects was emphasized, highlighting the critical role of direct guidance from the project leader to ensure smooth progress. It was noted that regular site inspections were crucial to avoid costly mistakes. The tight deadlines in commercial projects, such as cafes, offices, and shops, were discussed, with examples demonstrating the importance of proper planning in achieving project success.
Time management was underscored, stressing the need for advance planning of orders and production processes. It was advised that fixed installations, such as drywall and ceramics, should be completed before moving on to movable furniture and decorative elements. The importance of continuous communication with teams to avoid irreversible mistakes was highlighted. Finding quality teams was noted to be challenging, especially in regions like Antalya, where it can be difficult to find skilled workers. It was pointed out that the pressure of completing tasks under time constraints could negatively affect quality, making continuous supervision essential.
The need for transparent communication with clients throughout the project was discussed. Clients often want to make design changes, and it is essential to inform them of the impact on the budget beforehand. The importance of controlling project costs at every stage was emphasized, and the advantages of making advance payments were explained due to fluctuating prices in some tasks. It was also noted that in commercial projects, the project fee and the implementation fee should be considered separately.
It was emphasized that inspections should be carried out at every stage of the construction process to avoid costly corrections later. Errors in electrical installations, for example, could cause serious problems in subsequent stages, so it was stressed that controlled progress is vital. The importance of site cleanliness and organization for client perception was discussed, and it was suggested that safety and insurance precautions should be clarified when making agreements with contractors.
In terms of client acquisition in interior architecture, the significant role of social media and referrals was discussed. Sharing well-photographed work on social media can create new business opportunities. Despite challenges in client acquisition and construction processes during the pandemic, it was noted that social media usage increased.
The event allowed students to gain valuable insights into the interior architecture sector and familiarize themselves with professional practices. We would like to express our gratitude to Interior Architect Sabiha ALPASAR for her valuable participation and for sharing her sector experience and professional knowledge with the students.
