Acoustics in Interior Spaces
The Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture at Antalya Bilim University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, added another valuable event to its 2024–2025 Spring Semester activities. On March 7, 2025, as part of the IAED 3302 Environmental Control in Interior Space course, a design-oriented talk was held under the supervision of Lecturer Canan BEDUR and Lecturer Kadir Emre BAKIR, offering students an interdisciplinary perspective that enriched their professional knowledge.
The event welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kıvanç KİTAPCI, a faculty member of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at the Faculty of Architecture, TOBB University of Economics and Technology. In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. KİTAPCI addressed the significance of acoustics in interior design through a multifaceted lens. Topics such as the relationship between sound and space, the impact of sound on interior comfort, acoustic requirements in spaces with different functions, and the selection of appropriate material types were thoroughly discussed.
It was emphasized that architectural acoustics is not merely a technical issue but a crucial design parameter that directly affects user experience. Assoc. Prof. Dr. KİTAPCI illustrated how parameters such as sound direction, insulation, and reverberation time should be addressed, especially in the design of music and performance spaces. Strategies for achieving acoustic comfort in various interior contexts were also shared.
Throughout the presentation, the interdisciplinary nature of interior architecture—where aesthetics and technical knowledge intersect—was once again underscored. Participating students had the opportunity to explore the topic of acoustics, often overlooked in design processes, in a more holistic and functionally driven manner. At the end of the event, students expressed their curiosity and motivation to learn by posing insightful questions to Assoc. Prof. Dr. KİTAPCI.
As the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Antalya Bilim University, we extend our sincere gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kıvanç KİTAPCI for his valuable contribution.
