Within the scope of the IAED 3358 Exhibition Stand Design course, conducted by the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture of Antalya Bilim University, under the coordination of Asst. Prof. Dr. Yaren ŞEKERCİ, an interdisciplinary design talk titled "Design Beyond Norms: Neurodiversity and the Mind in Space" is being held. In this context, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Ekin SÜT was hosted as a guest speaker. During the event, the concept of neurodiversity was addressed to understand the human being, who is the main user of the space, in a more holistic manner. By emphasizing that space users do not consist solely of neurotypical individuals, it was discussed which physical, visual, auditory, and environmental stimuli might disturb individuals with high sensory sensitivities in interior spaces. Within the scope of the talk, students had the opportunity to evaluate the importance of considering different user profiles in the design process to create inclusive and human-centered spaces. The event provided a productive discussion environment regarding how user experience, empathy, and neurodiversity awareness can be reflected in design decisions within interior architecture education. Simultaneously, by evaluating the impacts of user experience awareness on managing the exhibition stand design process and primary cost analyses, a productive discussion environment that guides design decisions is offered. As the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Antalya Bilim University, we extend our deepest gratitude to Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Ekin SÜT for sharing her valuable experiences regarding neurodiversity and spatial psychology with our students.
